Open Source Software for Home Schoolers
Recently I did some online searching for Open Source Software for Home-schoolers. The results were both disappointing and discouraging. The dearth of information was appalling.
Most schooling-related open source sites discussed how school districts could save money by using open source products and technology. That is an excellent topic and more tax-payers need to learn and be informed about that. `See “Schools Save With Open Source” for just one example.
But that is not all that there is to it.
Education and technology go hand-in-hand and open source provides quality affordable materials for both. Together. Mano y mano. We are doing an injustice to our children by not doing more to educate about technology and not using more technology to educate.
Home schoolers need to be in the forefront in this arena. Public schools, due to educational “discounts” and grants, are becoming training grounds for proprietary products under the guise of education. Mark Shuttleworth wrote an excellent treatise on this topic. Click here to read “Open Letter To Educational Institutions“.
There are some global initiatives addressing these issues.
With this website, my goal is to provide links and information about these global initiatives.
